15:15:50 <Tony_Novello> I wnated to talk to you folks about some of the cards that are underrated. We all know about the power cards, (caravan, menxo, ect.) But I wanted to talk about what some of the underrated ones.
15:16:14 <rddog1> Cool!I asked about those on the list!
15:16:34 <Tony_Novello> I think the biggest right now is the Ultimate Rule Card.
15:17:16 <Tony_Novello> Very few other cards gice such complete protection against game breakers like Sure Thing/Fates and Nobody Wins!.
15:17:52 <arioch> go ahead and rub it in - see if you get antother 4th ed set
15:18:14 <Tony_Novello> This one saved my butt at least 6 diff. times at Gen Con. Once it's played you create a dead card in most of your opponet's decks.
15:18:20 <rddog1> I sense some hostility there! :-)
15:19:20 <Tony_Novello> Any rules your opponents are playing with become blank cards, only good for discarding for the Bag of Holding :P
15:20:11 <Tony_Novello> Two other good cards are the realms, Ur Draxa and Forgotten Ruins.
15:20:52 <Tony_Novello> The important thing about these 3 is they offer complete protection that is almost impossible to get around and...
15:21:18 <rddog1> Mt.Deismarr would be cool if more people played with blood abilities.
15:21:44 <Tony_Novello> And once you play them out they stay there, so you don't have to keep drawing them over and over again, thus slowing you down.
15:21:45 <StEvil> 4th/32 & DU/34 for those unfamiliar with the texts of Ur Draxa and Forgotten Ruins.
15:22:48 <Tony_Novello> These are better answer (I think) then counter cards which you have to keep drawing and discarding.
15:23:25 <Tony_Novello> Same goes for Winner's Cape and Gib Kcir.
15:23:44 <Scorpion has logged on>
15:23:48 <Scorpion is joining the channel>
15:24:08 <Tony_Novello> About Gib Kcir, the worst thing you can usually do to your opponent is to play it into your pool and leave it there for the rest of the game :)
15:24:22 <Elric> Hmmm... Personally, I like Celik ( AR/96 ) for dealwing with the opponentt's magic items. Esp. if I can get my Death Glyph ( AR/70 ) undeaer it... :)
15:25:02 <Tony_Novello> Since most tourney decks have this card you have created another dead card for your opponet. 2 if they are also using the Gate Keeper.
15:25:37 <Elric> Nasty! :)
15:26:09 <Tony_Novello> I learned this from James McCoy... He did it to me once ;)
15:27:06 <Elric> That's what I love about this game: 9 times out of 10, you learn a nifty trick when someone else does it to you first. :)
15:27:34 <rddog1> Or,you run acroos cool combos by complete accident.
15:27:47 <Tony_Novello> When choosing my realms I always try to get the one that have powers that are always in effect, like Ur Draxa and Forgotten Ruins.
15:28:43 <Tony_Novello> The Speed cards you almost have to use (Tyr, Menzo, Temple), but you still have a good 6 or 7 slots to choose something diff.
15:29:24 <Elric> How do you feel about The Horned Society ( 3rd/117 )?
15:30:02 <David_Williams> Or Slorath's Gloves?
15:30:12 <Tony_Novello> Horned Society is in many of my decks :) It's a winner.
15:30:22 <rddog1> Realm of the White Witch?
15:30:58 <Tony_Novello> I don't care for the gloves because your opponent can wind up getting a fist full of cards back right when you don't want him too.
15:31:38 <Tony_Novello> I also use the Realm of the White Witch alot too. Chuck showed me that. (meaning I stole the idea from him!)
15:33:00 <Tony_Novello> Most realms that have combat only powers just don't work in tourneys, at least not at this time. I'd rather use non-combat realms so they look inviting for my opponent to attack and I can smack him with an instant defeat when defending.
15:33:38 <Tony_Novello> I have seen alot of good combat decks lose because they could not be attacked.
15:34:06 <merlose has logged on>
15:34:10 <merlose is joining the channel>
15:34:28 <Tony_Novello> If you are determined to fight combat make sure to use lots of realms that are easy for your opponets to attack. Because your oppoents may be using realms you can't get too.
15:35:55 <Tony_Novello> Combat decks just need combat, it doesn't matter if you are attacking or defending most times. The idea is to bleed you opponent's pool down to size and load up on spoils.
15:36:18 <Elric> Whay, in your opinion, are some underrated Holdings?
15:36:48 <Tony_Novello> Fort. Bailey is huge sometimes, but I don't really count it as a holding.
15:36:56 <rddog1> Tony,I noticed that your deck only had 3 combat support cards in it(dreaded ghost,Myrmidons, and fighting dirty)Did you ever find yourself in a tight spot due to this?
15:37:30 <Tony_Novello> Nope. If I can't kill the attacker instantly I don't fight. period.
15:37:50 <Tony_Novello> Way to many bad things happen to me when I fight :)
15:38:25 <Tony_Novello> I keep a couple of rebuilders in my deck to repair the damage.
15:38:31 <rddog1> Then what would you say is the overall stategy for your deck?Defensive with many instant kills?
15:38:38 <David_Williams> What's your opinion of the Ebony Cup of Fate?
15:38:51 <Tony_Novello> No, defensive with lots of realm destruction...
15:39:29 <Tony_Novello> I play with Dist., Et. Trans.,and Dissolution .
15:40:10 <Tony_Novello> This also why I play with so many cards that reamain in play, it shortens my draw deck so I can draw the realm destroyers more often.
15:40:34 <Fett> What do u think of FR/3
15:40:53 <Tony_Novello> E. Cup is kind of weak I feel. basicly it's a combo, you need a FR champ to put it on.
15:41:47 <Tony_Novello> FR/2 is a must have, sometimes just to stop your opponent from playing it and give yourself one for chance to bring him down.
15:42:01 <Tony_Novello> sorry...I mean FR/3
15:42:56 <Tony_Novello> On the realm destruction, I really think I set a record against Bob Carmicheal in the final. I toasted six of realms in the first game alone ;)
15:43:03 <rddog1> Ahhhhh,I see!OK,I'll ask the dreaded question. What do you think would happen if next year a variant was run where noone was allowed to use Caravan,Caer Allison,Menzo,or Ancient Kalidnay? How would this affect your deck building philosophy? After all, these 4 cards were in over half the semi-finalists decks.Doesn't this sometimes just make it a race to see who is lucky enough to draw the "power" cards first?
15:44:07 <Tony_Novello> Yes it does to an extent. There are still 51 other cards to worry about though :)
15:44:29 <StEvil> OK, when you have a question, simply type a "?" and I will put you in the question queue, then when it is your turn ask the question.
15:44:46 <StEvil> That way it is a little more organized.
15:44:54 <Tony_Novello> By removing these cards the games will no doubt slow down though.
15:45:17 <StEvil> ?
15:45:51 <StEvil> After the 4 aforementioned cards what cards MUST be in a championship deck?
15:47:03 <Tony_Novello> Dreaded Ghost, Gib Kcir, Calm, and Wild MAgic Surge in games with more then 2 players.
15:47:29 <Tony_Novello> Wild Ma. Surge (FR/10) is basicly another caravan.
15:48:02 <Elric> FR/10 (No punctuation, or it messes up. :) )
15:48:03 <Tony_Novello> I would also think Temporal Stasis falls into the "must" area too.
15:49:01 <rddog1> ?
15:49:02 <StEvil> ?
15:49:05 <Tony_Novello> Another overlooked area is the seating at the tourney table.
15:49:06 <StEvil> OK Rdog
15:49:41 <rddog1> Tony,is your tourney deck the same or similar to the deck you use in "friendly" games?
15:50:21 <Tony_Novello> yes and no :) We play many different decks, but before the con we play alot of power decks to "get in shape".
15:50:46 <StEvil> What about seating at the tourney table?
15:51:02 <Tony_Novello> My favorite deck is my "to kill a mocking bird" deck. I will say I have never won a game with it thoguh :)
15:51:57 <Tony_Novello> Seating: This will often determine the winner before the game even starts. If the palyers are equal and have similiar deck. Just like the WC Semi-finals.
15:52:23 <Tony_Novello> You alway want the player you consider the best sitting on your right. Always.
15:52:54 <StEvil> Ah.
15:52:58 <Tony_Novello> This works even better if you go before he does. Now he has tons of Rule of the Cosmos problems.
15:53:25 <Elric has logged off>
15:53:36 <StEvil> Actually I did notice that 50% of the decks in the WC used 25 of the same cards.
15:53:37 <Elric has logged on>
15:53:53 <Elric is joining the channel>
15:53:55 <Tony_Novello> The real killer though is the Wild Magic Surge/Temporal Stasis combo. He looses 2 turns. Throw in a caravan of your own and now you have taken 4-5 turns to his zero.
15:54:10 <StEvil> ouch
15:54:25 <Elric> ?
15:54:37 <StEvil> Elric your up!
15:54:58 <Tony_Novello> Few players will recover. I did this twice in the WC. Once agains James McCoy (last years champ) and once agains Chuck Carey.
15:54:59 <Elric> I play a lot of two-player games. What, IYO, are the must-haves for a two player game?
15:55:52 <Tony_Novello> iIn two player games, you have to go with the "touchy-feely" cards.
15:56:05 <Reaper has logged on>
15:56:12 <Reaper is joining the channel>
15:56:16 <Tony_Novello> Hettman Tsurin, Ren's Crystal Ball, Nobody Wins!, ect.
15:56:27 <Tony_Novello> Marco Volo too.
15:56:34 <Magik> hey reaper
15:56:48 <Reaper> heya guys. apols for being late. my ISP was down
15:57:03 <rddog1> Starving artist,solamnia,handmine,etc.
15:57:07 <Tony_Novello> With only one person to worry about, it is easy to combine these cards into leaving your opponet cardless.
15:57:40 <Tony_Novello> Not the Starving Artist and Handmind, except maybe for defense.
15:57:54 <StEvil> ?
15:57:56 <Reaper> ?
15:58:06 <StEvil> OK Reaper then me...
15:58:14 <Tony_Novello> Those cards require your opponet to do something in order to get them to work. Never rely on your opponent to help you win :P
15:58:35 <Reaper> Tony, you are known for your speed decks and winning a lot ;) what cards would you say give you the most trouble ?
15:58:35 <rddog1> ?
15:58:57 <StEvil> me then rddog1
15:59:17 <Tony_Novello> Sure Thing /Fates and Blodd Abilities.
15:59:35 <rddog1> retract my ?
15:59:43 <StEvil> OK.
16:00:12 <Tony_Novello> Bob Carmicheal might have won with those cards, but he was sitting on my right :)
16:00:32 <Reaper> hehe
16:00:33 <StEvil> OK, how many chase would you say is necessary to have in your deck to make it far in the tourneys?
16:00:47 <arioch> Have to go - heading for a night of Settlers of Catan and Spellfire. Tony thanks for providing us in-sight
16:01:02 <Magik> settlers is cool
16:01:07 <Reaper> ?
16:01:10 <Reaper> hehe
16:01:12 <Tony_Novello> Man...there are about 6 I guess. Take care Steve! and send me that 4th/36
16:01:41 <arioch> #46 BlacK Spear Tribe
16:01:56 <arioch> ltr
16:02:06 <arioch has logged off>
16:02:08 <Tony_Novello> Gib Kcir (just to stop your opponets from using it), Cold Cup, Dragon Font, Eth. Champion
16:02:49 <Tony_Novello> Bag of Beans and maybe Bell of Might or Onad.
16:03:00 <StEvil> So basically the ones that are hard to acquire now.
16:03:10 <Reaper> hehe. probaly.
16:03:11 <Reaper> ?
16:03:12 <Tony_Novello> Oh yea! and Ultimate Rule Card POc/18
16:03:28 <StEvil> Reaper you got it...
16:03:30 <Tony_Novello> That's why they are hard to get I guess :)
16:03:40 <Scorpion has logged off>
16:03:48 <Reaper> i was interested to see you had dissolution in your tourney deck, how much real milage do you get from this card ?
16:04:00 <Tony_Novello> Dragon Font and Cold Cup are tops though.
16:04:27 <Tony_Novello> I used it well over a dozen times in the final round alone.
16:04:42 <StEvil> One of which I don't have. (No CC here) :(
16:04:44 <Reaper> really ? i would never have thought it would be this useful to be honest
16:05:02 <rddog1> ?
16:05:12 <StEvil> go rddog1
16:05:13 <Tony_Novello> Dissolution can be cast in phase 5 and Pit of the Mind Lord is a much used Dungeon card.
16:05:31 <Reaper> good point.
16:05:42 <rddog1> Tony, just out of curiosity, who would you rank as your toughest opponent(friendly or tourney play)?
16:06:41 <Tony_Novello> Man, there are so many good players now. When I won the 1st World Championship I thought there were about 5 top notch players. Now there are dozens!
16:06:50 <Reaper> ?
16:07:13 <StEvil> Reaper's next
16:07:33 <Tony_Novello> Biggest in my mind are Brian Kellenberger, Chuck Carey, Andy Tobolski, Rob Rabe, James McCoy.
16:07:47 <rddog1> Wytefang?
16:08:36 <Tony_Novello> Fang' plays a goofy tourney deck. He always seems to beat himself when I play him. He kick my fanny when we play for fun though :)
16:09:33 <StEvil> OK Reap! Your question?
16:09:41 <Reaper> well its 2 really
16:09:48 <Reaper> both about realms
16:09:50 <Tony_Novello> OK :)
16:10:01 <StEvil> Ok one question 2 parts...
16:10:14 <Reaper> i noticed a sub theme about menzo in your realm selections...was it a case of who gets these realms down controls the menzos ?
16:10:53 <Reaper> specifically menzo, lair of shadowdrake and duchy of tenh
16:11:04 <Tony_Novello> Not really. I play with Duchy about 50% of the time. It usually doesn't work becuase my opponent play around it.
16:11:36 <Tony_Novello> I play with Lair of the Shadowdrake DR/3 iI think. For the quick win.
16:12:11 <StEvil> ?
16:12:19 <Tony_Novello> I have won a lot of games off of the Lair too.
16:12:51 <Reaper> 2nd point) you have a good spread of worlds on the realms for GH, FR and DS + 1 that can take any holding, i wondered why none of the usual speedy holding slipped in ? (Arkhold, Mulmaster or Ancient arms of the sheild lands)
16:13:46 <Tony_Novello> Holdings are inherintly (sp?) weaker then some other cards becuase they are 1 half a combo.
16:14:12 <rddog1> ?
16:14:22 <StEvil> me then rddog1
16:14:28 <Tony_Novello> Which means you need another card to make it work or to even be able to play it.
16:14:43 <merlose> ?
16:14:50 <Tony_Novello> Same with Arifacts.
16:15:08 <Reaper> its just with having 2+ realms that can use each of those holdings they didnt seem that hard to work into the deck from what i was looking at.
16:15:10 <StEvil> me, rddog1, merlose
16:15:24 <Reaper> but then, im not a world champion :)
16:15:29 <Tony_Novello> I do use both, but I foce myself to limit them to one or 2 in a deck.
16:16:12 <StEvil> Do you have any general advice about tourney's that you would give to a player that has never been to one?
16:17:10 <Reaper> ?
16:17:19 <Tony_Novello> Yes, be sure to have fun. You will most likely lose real fast. Keep your eyes open for ideas to "borrow" and be sure to have fun. That's what will keep you going back.
16:17:28 <StEvil> answer, rddog, merlose, Reaper.
16:17:56 <rddog1> Do you like any of the realm artifacts from the Dungeons set?I love the Cannonball in my Birthright theme deck!
16:18:34 <Tony_Novello> They work great in World War decks. Not so could in the other foramts.
16:19:18 <Tony_Novello> Again, they are 1 half of a combo. In most cases you not only need a realm to play it on, you then need your opponent to attack you.
16:19:33 <StEvil> merlose
16:19:48 <merlose> Do you every use Bissel and Hookhill in a tourney and load up with a few extra Greyhawk realms?
16:19:49 <rddog1> They tend to be more effective in 110 card games.
16:19:52 <Tony_Novello> I sure would nat attack knowing that the realm artifact is going to make it hurt ;)
16:20:26 <Tony_Novello> My brother uses the GH combos. He finished 3rd, so I guess it works :)
16:20:38 <merlose> OK
16:20:57 <Tony_Novello> I don't recomend going to heavy on any combos though. Too much luck involved.
16:21:08 <merlose> ?
16:21:35 <StEvil> reaper then merlose
16:21:56 <Reaper> Tony, from looking at yuor deck there are 2 points id like to ask you about...
16:22:07 <Tony_Novello> 110 card decks are much better suited. The games are much longer and you have the time needed to bring the peices of your strategy together.
16:22:21 <Tony_Novello> Sure :)
16:22:33 <Reaper> well, one is about spells.
16:22:46 <Tony_Novello> Love 'em!
16:22:49 <Reaper> you mentioned before that blood abilities cause you troube,
16:23:01 <Reaper> i can see one disple a retarget and a last sea
16:23:13 <Tony_Novello> very few good stopper for B A.
16:23:19 <Reaper> but no midnight
16:23:25 <Reaper> or amulet of spell turning
16:23:33 <Reaper> instead chosing to go with amulet of spell protection
16:23:44 <Reaper> have you foudn that deck gets a bit battered when the spells are flying ?
16:23:57 <Tony_Novello> Midnight doesn't work 90% of the time. Most casting comes from the Eth. Champion.
16:24:04 <Reaper> with no pit of mind lord or labryinth or cstl GH
16:24:35 <Reaper> i would have thought that the old amulet of spell turning would have been a good blanket.
16:24:43 <Tony_Novello> Actually I do get battered by "true" spell decks. They give me lots of problems :)
16:25:47 <Tony_Novello> Amulet of Spellturning only stops spells directed at chamopions, if I remeber correctly. Most spells in tournamnets are aimed at realms and dungeon cards.
16:26:09 <Reaper> nod
16:26:27 <Reaper> you also had 2 + realms that could take the old cavern of ancient knowledge
16:26:56 <Reaper> i was just interested in how badly spells gave you trouble.
16:27:10 <Tony_Novello> I almost added Cavern of An. Knw. but backed out at the last minute :)
16:27:36 <StEvil> looks like someone is looking to dethone you next year Tony.
16:27:56 <Reaper> 2nd question was about your choice of necba given your realm/champion/combat cards
16:28:07 <Tony_Novello> With my re-targets I want my opponts to try and cast spells at my realms. That way I can blow them up with their own cards. Once I add mine to the mix it gets bloody :)
16:28:20 <Reaper> hehe
16:28:28 <Tony_Novello> hehe... That would be great :)
16:28:53 <Reaper> i just wondered if when you thre down the necba gauntlet, did you ever get burned due to not a lot of real combat stuff apart from the champion power itself.
16:29:09 <Tony_Novello> I use necba just to keep him out of my opponets pool.
16:29:11 <Reaper> given the okld fighty dirty of course
16:29:24 <rddog1 has logged off>
16:29:45 <rddog1 has logged on>
16:29:50 <rddog1 is joining the channel>
16:29:56 <Tony_Novello> I do get burned once in awhile. But razed realms are OK. Discarded realms are not.
16:30:15 <Reaper> nod. another quick point if no one else is queing a question currently...
16:30:27 <StEvil> merlose is next
16:30:31 <Reaper> okay
16:30:41 <StEvil> go merlose, then reaper again...
16:30:45 <merlose> Ah yes, to me there is luck involved with combos , but is this not the case in your winning deck also, if you don't get the right cards at the right time....... what can you do?
16:30:52 <Tony_Novello> Necba also makes me a juicy target. So I hold onto all my instant kills like Living Wall and Dreaded Ghost to use in defence.
16:31:36 <Tony_Novello> luck will always be a part of it. The trick is reduce your need for luck as much as you can.
16:31:59 <merlose> Ah but there is no sure fire way I know to do this.
16:32:43 <Tony_Novello> of course not :) You just do the best you can.
16:33:00 <merlose> OK
16:33:11 <StEvil> OK Reap hit it...
16:33:17 <Reaper> thanks steve.
16:33:25 <Reaper> well, looking at your champions,
16:33:27 <Tony_Novello> Cutting down of the combos is one way. Another is to limit the number of one use cards.
16:34:03 <merlose> ?
16:34:22 <Reaper> immunities dont seem to be a big factor for you.
16:34:46 <Reaper> also you have mentioned you have some champs in to stop others really playing them
16:34:50 <StEvil> reap, then merlose.
16:35:12 <Reaper> my question is this: how would you think a Tahk's helmet of power would help you out in that case
16:35:21 <Reaper> 'then you could nail necba, kcir etc...
16:35:33 <Tony_Novello> I can't figure out what to be immune too :) There is so much now, with Blood Abiliteis, Spells, Thief Skillls, ect. I just gave up and take it on the chin when I have too.
16:35:38 <Reaper> and the onlt champ with an immunity you really use is ethereal
16:35:39 <rddog1> Cool card Reap!
16:35:46 <Reaper> and he would be immune to the helmet
16:35:58 <Reaper> so no penalty for you, big penalty for everyone else
16:37:41 <Tony_Novello> Tak. Helmet is a great card. But most of my damage dealing is aimed at realms so immunity isn't a problem nine times out of ten. I also relay way to heavily on the Eht. Champ. to get me out of the Fighting Dirty.
16:37:55 <Reaper> i was thinking
16:38:16 <rddog1> ?
16:38:17 <Tony_Novello> Good idea though :) I may "borrow" it!
16:38:18 <Reaper> that the old trapped, taks mirror of life trapping and wine of eternity would be nice cards to use then
16:38:29 <Reaper> that way you stop them 'using' the power
16:38:34 <Reaper> but stop anyone else playing it too
16:38:42 <StEvil> finish here, merlose, then rddog
16:39:12 <Reaper> saves you getting necba burned
16:39:19 <Tony_Novello> true, but what do I take out of my deck to make room for these? The eternal question :P
16:39:41 <Reaper> necba for one ;)
16:40:43 <Tony_Novello> The big trouble I always have is with repeating Blood Abilities and Thief Skills.
16:41:36 <Tony_Novello> Con Game is a killer!
16:41:44 <StEvil> merlose is next
16:41:47 <Reaper> would have thought con game, death field aer in most...
16:42:11 <bobnik has logged on>
16:42:15 <bobnik is joining the channel>
16:42:21 <Tony_Novello> Surprisingly not.
16:42:22 <merlose> When it comes down to building a deck do you think a person should ultimatley use the cards he is most comfortable with, or use the HAVE TO USE cards to be competitive?
16:43:26 <Tony_Novello> Some cards you just have to use. There are about 20 out of a pool of 50. Any 20 from the pool of 50 will do usually. But Cards you are familiar with are just as important.
16:44:15 <merlose> Yes, to me it seems if I try to play new cards it usually takes a few games to be totaly comfortable with them.
16:44:25 <Tony_Novello> It's also important to know whats in your deck really well. This way you have an idea late in the game of what is in your draw pile and what isn't.
16:44:35 <merlose> Thanks
16:44:46 <StEvil> rddog!
16:44:48 <rddog1> Tony,I'm a big,BIG fan of 110 card decks;do you play with them often, and what are some of your favorite cards to use in the bigger deck?I love using the Tarroka deck;it has become a brutal card in my groups play! Also, what are some of your favorite "Themes" for decks.
16:45:56 <Tony_Novello> We played straight 110 decks for about 9 months a couple of years ago. We don't play them very often lately, due to not having all the time anymore :)
16:46:22 <Reaper> ?
16:46:22 <Tony_Novello> 110 decks are awesome. We are very combo heavy in the bigger decks.
16:46:32 <bobnik> ?
16:46:44 <StEvil> reaper then bobnik
16:46:50 <Tony_Novello> longer games give you a chance to bring the really wicked stuff into play.
16:47:05 <Tony_Novello> Hi Bob! :)
16:47:38 <bobnik> Hey!
16:48:36 <StEvil> Reaper I believe you re up.
16:48:51 <Reaper> Tony, hehe, another thing in your deck
16:49:00 <Tony_Novello> shoot :)
16:49:18 <Reaper> do you think that you may get more milage out of Mikor, 3rd ally instead of Gatekeeper ?
16:49:36 <Reaper> i mean, you get to use it a lot
16:49:43 <Reaper> and get everything out of abyss
16:50:02 <Reaper> and can lose a combat any time you like given the champs etc.
16:50:29 <Tony_Novello> I have thoguht about it, but I don't really recycle my abyss that often. I use the Gate Keeper only when I need champions fast.
16:50:56 <Reaper> i have to confess a lot of my questions are cos im preparing for the UK gencon ;) i would like to win :)
16:51:12 <Elric> Well folks, this has been fun. But I have to go now. I have to go push carts for Wally World. Thanks for your time, Tony! I really appreciate your taking the time to answer our questions.
16:51:34 <Tony_Novello> I usually use him like I do Gib Kcir. Just to deprive my opponent from being able to use him. With the hidden pool it makes it nearly impossible for the opponent to make multiple copies of GAte Kepper.
16:51:53 <Tony_Novello> Seeya Elric! Take Care :)
16:51:57 <Elric has logged off>
16:51:58 <Reaper> have you had that happen much to you ?
16:53:03 <Tony_Novello> Mikor also requires that your opponent have combat with you. Sometimes is just doesn't happen :)
16:53:25 <Reaper> you can always mek em ;)
16:53:34 <Reaper> make them
16:53:46 <StEvil> bobnik is up!
16:53:48 <bobnik> I may have missed this, b/c I came in late, but, any ideas Tony on variants for next year's Con which will force increased deck variety? I loved the Warrior's Rule/Grind, even though people didn't change their decks all that much. I think we should all think hard and come up with a cool GenCon 2000 variant.
16:53:51 <Tony_Novello> I never lose a comabt on purpose. I just give up the realm and keep my champions in my pool.
16:54:33 <Tony_Novello> There have been a couple of ideas tossed out. No Big 4 is popular.
16:54:48 <bobnik> Caravan, GF, Kalidnay, Menzo?
16:54:57 <Fett has logged off>
16:55:00 <bobnik> or Caer?
16:55:20 <Tony_Novello> We could also make the WC a World War variant, or a 75 card tourney.
16:55:34 <Reaper> i might even get to play in that one :)
16:55:39 <Tony_Novello> Caravan, Menzo, Caer and Anc. Kal.
16:55:46 <bobnik> I think 75 Grind might be cool.
16:55:49 <David_Williams> 75 would be nice - more room for combos.
16:56:08 <Reaper> sounds like we are all playing killer insinct!! ULTRA COMBO....
16:56:26 <Reaper> :)
16:56:42 <Tony_Novello> I don't like to get any wierder then these myself. If the varinats get to stragne they take to long and all the games get called on time.
16:56:46 <StEvil> We always play 75 in our group.
16:56:50 <rddog1> I think the no big 4 would add a little more deck building strategy, and you would see more variety in the types of decks.
16:56:55 <bobnik> There's got to be something that'll prompt people to go back to the drawing board. Esp. now that everyone has a list of the top 27 decks :)
16:57:56 <Tony_Novello> As always though, it'll be Jim that decides :) SO who knows what his devious mind will come up with ;)
16:58:03 <Reaper> hehe
16:58:40 <Tony_Novello> That was a good thing that Ogre posted those. Really Cool. We should thank him next chance we get :)
16:58:40 <StEvil> Any other Questions, comments?
16:59:05 <Reaper> yeah :) or i would have had a lot less questiosn for you Tony :)
16:59:14 <bobnik> ?
16:59:16 <StEvil> hehe
16:59:23 <Tony_Novello> hehe
16:59:24 <StEvil> bobnik - go for it
16:59:40 <bobnik> Tony, have you ever suspected anyone of cheating in a tourny game, and if so, how did you handle it?
17:00:31 <Tony_Novello> Only once. It was with his shuffling. I told him I wanted to shuffle his deck. He wouldn't let me, but he did shuffle it properly after that.
17:00:59 <bobnik> That's a great idea. I had the same problem in this year's con and I didn't know what to do.
17:01:24 <Reaper> you have the right to shuffle thier decks i believe
17:01:30 <Reaper> if requested
17:01:40 <Tony_Novello> be sure to say something, even if you come across kind of mean :)
17:01:44 <Reaper> and deffinatly to cut it before they begin
17:01:46 <bobnik> it's just that it's a quick way to piss someone off if you're wrong
17:02:09 <Reaper> well, they way round it is to offer your deck to be shuffled as if its the most natural thing in the world
17:02:17 <Reaper> dont say 'do you want to' just hand it over
17:02:21 <Reaper> and look at them
17:02:36 <Tony_Novello> If they are cheating, then it doesn't matter if they are gunning for you are not. I rather have a mad guy play fair then a cheater think I'm a nice guy :)
17:02:39 <Reaper> when they say whats this for, you say 'shuffling of course'
17:02:44 <bobnik> hehe
17:03:02 <Tony_Novello> good idea reaper :)
17:03:06 <Reaper> you look a bit foolish refusing to shuffle someone elses offered deck
17:03:20 <Tony_Novello> This makes me think of the mental aspect of tourneys.
17:04:04 <Tony_Novello> Do many of you have any "tricks" that you use to gain a meantal advantage?
17:04:23 <Reaper> probably subconciously.
17:04:27 <rddog1> Everyone must think positively;I'm positive Tony's going to kick my butt!LOL
17:04:34 <bobnik> Speaking of "mental", I thought Tony was going to kill me when I kept using the Ring of All Seeing on him in the finals :)
17:04:35 <Reaper> judicious uses or smiles..slighty raised cards in hands..
17:04:57 <Tony_Novello> As an example I like to look at one players formation real hard... then with out looking over at the other player I hit one of his realm with Estate Trans.
17:04:58 <Reaper> a bit of leaning forward ...
17:05:27 <Tony_Novello> Sorry Bob :( I was out of line on that.
17:06:04 <bobnik> No problem at all. The finals is the most tense game there is.
17:06:23 <Tony_Novello> Then I wait for the other player to ask me what I'm doing. As I turn to look at him I say something like "I'm toasting your realm".
17:06:56 <Reaper> using worlds like slap, smash, toast when playing really good cards
17:07:26 <Tony_Novello> Try this out. Look at one player's hand or formation real hard and then hit the other with something bad. The whole time without looking at him.
17:07:36 <Reaper> always aggravates a friend of mine :) he does daft things then
17:08:41 <Tony_Novello> You DO get a psycological advantage from this sometimes. I can't explain it, but I have both used this and had it used against me.
17:08:43 <Kythrain has logged on>
17:08:48 <Kythrain is joining the channel>
17:08:49 <Reaper> hehe
17:09:12 <bobnik> There's definitely an art to crushing both opponents without making them feel like you're their enemy #1. You have to share the wealth a bit. Unless you're going for a cheap spoil :)
17:09:28 <Reaper> all witness the mighty Sourcere Tim!
17:09:32 <Tony_Novello> Another thing is to constanly whine about how bad you are playing.
17:09:48 <Kythrain> Greetings o mighty Spellfire Champions!
17:09:54 <bobnik> I've honed that talent to razor-sharpness.
17:10:00 <Kythrain> *grin*
17:10:28 <Tony_Novello> after about 20 minutes of this your opponents tend to leave you alone, unless you are the clear leader.
17:10:29 <rddog1> I can do that constantly and be sincere about it!LOL!
17:10:34 <Kythrain> So, question: Where are we in this discussion?
17:10:47 <Reaper> your deck is designed not to be in the lead Tony :)
17:10:48 <Scorpion has logged on>
17:10:55 <Tony_Novello> kind of rambling now...
17:10:56 <Reaper> then roll all over them
17:11:00 <Scorpion is joining the channel>
17:11:43 <Tony_Novello> correct. You never want to be in the lead unless you and finish the game off in short order. Sometimes you can't help but be in the lead, but I try to avoid it as best I can.
17:11:45 <Reaper> i think when I get to play here i must go in with a big TARGET written on my head
17:11:52 <Kythrain> I've got a deck I'd like to go over if we have time and there are no objections, since this is a deck building seminar...
17:12:03 <bobnik> Whenever Tony gets to where he needs 3 "unrazing" of realms to achieve victory, pound him with everything you've got!
17:12:23 <Reaper> might have something to do with every card i put down they all have to look at and then call me a b*~$£^d
17:12:30 <Reaper> they didnt like necba
17:12:36 <Reaper> and tried to ban him on sight
17:12:42 <Tony_Novello> I won a couple of game with one realm face up and two face down. It was pretty sweet ;)
17:12:47 <merlose has logged off>
17:12:48 <Kythrain> Necba's a pain in the you know what is what Necba is.
17:13:17 <bobnik> gotta go. Later Tony and everyone!
17:13:21 <bobnik has logged off>
17:13:22 <Kythrain> Later
17:13:26 <Tony_Novello> Seeya bob :)
17:13:59 <Tony_Novello> a couple more questions and then I will have to go too. Who wanted to go over some deck ideas?
17:14:07 <Kythrain> Me.
17:14:15 <Kythrain> I had a deck I thought I'd show the list for
17:14:21 <Tony_Novello> OK Ky. shoot.
17:14:21 <Kythrain> And get ideas on it.
17:14:32 <Kythrain> I call it Vengeance Unlimited.
17:14:35 <Tony_Novello> That's a good idea.
17:14:41 <Kythrain> Vengeance/Recycling/Playing to Lose
17:14:47 <Kythrain> 110 card
17:14:59 <Kythrain> Let me get the deck list up...
17:15:08 <Tony_Novello> Sounds like a lot of fun :)
17:15:41 <Kythrain> It's a fun deck, but a lot of chase (21)
17:15:57 <Tony_Novello> any other questions? we can line them up now if you want.
17:16:06 <Kythrain> Warning: Large post incoming...
17:16:14 <Reaper> Get Down!!!
17:16:23 <StEvil> Duck!
17:16:33 <rddog1> <people dancing in background>
17:16:35 <Tony_Novello> :::hidding behind Keyboard:::
17:16:47 <StEvil> You may have to break it up Kyth.
17:17:07 <Reaper> as in Stab back, nothing to see here...?
17:17:51 <Tony_Novello> while we're waiting, what do you guys think is the most powerful/useful card?
17:18:03 <Tony_Novello> Dragon Font for me.
17:18:23 <Reaper> My fav is Gib Irod
17:18:32 <Reaper> so a nasty piece of work in combat
17:18:34 <StEvil> Con Game, is one of my favorites.
17:18:41 <rddog1> Cold Cup is a big favorite;especially in a 110 card game after your opponent has drawn,OUCH!
17:18:43 <StEvil> Dan loves it. ;)
17:18:58 <Tony_Novello> I here ya on the CC :P
17:19:06 <Kythrain has logged off>
17:19:23 <Tony_Novello> we lost him :(

17:19:35 <Kythrain> Couldn't handle the cut and paste...
17:19:45 <Kythrain> Give me a second, I'll do this by card type...
17:19:49 <StEvil> there is a char limit on the input box
17:19:58 <Tony_Novello> Cold Cup can win alot of games for you. Best used on the very first turn.

17:23:50 <Kythrain> That's the deck
17:24:09 <StEvil> That all? :)
17:24:15 <Kythrain> yeah
17:24:18 <Tony_Novello> I like the Shaqat Beatles :)
17:24:20 <Kythrain> 110 cards
17:24:34 <Tony_Novello> a very under used card.
17:24:40 <Kythrain> There is a lot of phase 3 nuke to the deck since I'll be losing most battles.
17:25:01 <rddog1> I like it;I would maybe suggest adding in Goldmoon so you can go "recycle" someof your opponent's spells against them!
17:25:12 <Reaper has logged off>
17:25:42 <Kythrain> not a bad thought, but I've got plenty of clerics I think. What i need at least one more of is regents or a champ able to use blood abilities.
17:26:09 <Kythrain> 1 regent, 3 abilities, 110 card deck.
17:26:16 <Kythrain> Ind of rough.
17:26:21 <Reaper has logged on>
17:26:22 <Kythrain> Kind of rough I mean
17:26:25 <Tony_Novello> I wouls also recommend using the Underdark realm that lets you negate psi powers and spells by discarding allies.
17:26:26 <rddog1> Vampire is good;he uses blood abilities and thief skills.:)
17:26:29 <Reaper is joining the channel>
17:26:37 <Reaper> ISP again
17:26:43 <Kythrain> ? I haven't seen that one, what is it??
17:26:58 <Kythrain> I was considering the Vampire actually.
17:27:02 <Tony_Novello> Vampire is good becuase he is the only one who doesn't need Quildmaster's permission.
17:27:13 <Kythrain> The other question is: What do I get rid of?
17:27:24 <Kythrain> If I'm gonna add cards that is.
17:26:09 <Kythrain> 1 regent, 3 abilities, 110 card deck.
17:26:16 <Kythrain> Ind of rough.
17:26:21 <Reaper has logged on>

17:28:11 <Kythrain> And does this combo work: Shaqat Beetles 3rd, Shaqat Beetles 4th. Level 0, you die.
17:28:29 <rddog1> The realm Tony spoke of is the Dispossessed,I believe.
17:28:39 <Kythrain> OK, a chase realm.
17:28:46 <Kythrain> That's why I didn't know it.
17:28:50 <Reaper> UD realm
17:29:25 <Tony_Novello> you would need to add a few underdark realms with it. Robin ,my wife, used Dispossesed and had great success.
17:30:00 <Kythrain> I was trying to use a lot of realms that I can raze to do things to help the Playing to Lose theme.
17:30:28 <Tony_Novello> Playing to Lose never works for me :(
17:30:38 <Kythrain> Phoebus the Lizard Man is a great card in this deck as well. RR/033
17:30:45 <Tony_Novello> I laways wind up one razed realms short!
17:30:52 <Kythrain> Bummer.
17:31:00 <Reaper> :(
17:31:11 <Kythrain> I don't have the card myself; this is purely a deck building exercise for me.
17:31:25 <Kythrain> I'm missing 23 of the cards to build it.
17:31:30 <Tony_Novello> I don't think the shaqat beatles cause an instant defeat. I don't have the 3rd ed. info infront of me thoguh.

17:32:47 <Reaper> lo steev
17:33:01 <Steev42> greets all...
17:33:09 <Tony_Novello> Hiya Steve!
17:33:12 <rddog1> Well,I must go now.Thank you for your wonderful insights Tony;you are a true champion(one who shares his knowl;edge)Good evening all.:)
17:33:22 <Reaper> later
17:33:30 <Kythrain> Hmmm... would a 3rd and 2 4th's work then since it's at a negative level?
17:33:46 <Kythrain> -1...
17:34:05 <Tony_Novello> neggative levels are OK. You can be negative and still continue the combat.
17:34:14 <Kythrain> Hmmm... ah well...
17:34:54 <rddog1 has logged off>
17:35:03 <Tony_Novello> there is a rule card that instaly defeats any champion reduced below zero thoguh. Dave Williams knows it :)
17:35:42 <Kythrain> And another question since I thought about putting him in here... when playing Gib Drawsemaj, do you pick two champions in play or any two champions printed?
17:35:57 <Reaper> in play i believe
17:36:08 <Tony_Novello> any in play.
17:36:24 <Kythrain> Ouch. that just killed that card. It now officially sucks.
17:36:52 <Tony_Novello> good combo for him would be Driizit and Iuz :P
17:37:01 <Kythrain> That's a good one.
17:37:11 <Reaper> i always liked irod and wall
17:37:18 <Tony_Novello> ::: I lose, lets go again!:::
17:37:19 <Kythrain> I was thinking Stryck and Phoebus, attaching the winged boots.
17:37:24 <Steev42> I thought of Iuz and Eritaan .... :)
17:37:36 <Tony_Novello> They are all good!
17:37:39 <Kythrain> Any two permissions champs.
17:38:00 <Tony_Novello> my persoanl fav is Etheral and Living Wall.
17:38:02 <Kythrain> Midnight and Arch Druid, Guildmaster and Sadira, etc...
17:38:12 <Kythrain> Ouch...
17:38:19 <Kythrain> vicious, I like it...
17:38:27 <Tony_Novello> level 20 wall immune to everything but allies and events.
17:38:28 <Reaper> celestial and wall
17:38:42 <Steev42> celestial is an avatar
17:38:43 <Tony_Novello> can't copy an avatar :(
17:38:48 <Reaper> but couldnt use avatar
17:38:51 <Kythrain> Still, it kills the card not being able to choose any champ.
17:39:13 <Kythrain> Wish I could, then I'd use celestial and phoebus...
17:39:14 <Tony_Novello> I would use it anyway. It is a killer card.
17:39:14 <Reaper> well irod is immune allies :)
17:40:04 <Kythrain> Add the Net of Entrapment, you're fine.
17:40:11 <Tony_Novello> with all the realm destruction you have, it'll be easy to bring him into play and it's a free 20 levels.
17:40:14 <Reaper> ot tapastry of dark souls
17:40:54 <Kythrain> I've already got my two avatars though--Iuz the Avatar and Yondalla the Provider (was thinking about ditching her though).
17:41:07 <Reaper> remnis is pure evil
17:41:13 <Kythrain> 4th/475
17:41:27 <Tony_Novello> Yondalla is kind of weak... HAve you thought about Lady of Fate?
17:41:46 <Kythrain> No I hadn't actually... not a bad choice...
17:41:51 <Reaper> and those killer boots
17:42:06 <Tony_Novello> Oh yeah! The boots :P
17:42:21 <Kythrain> See, it's all about the boots...
17:42:36 <StEvil> It's gotta be the shoes
17:42:41 <Reaper> grin
17:42:46 <Kythrain> Just got the Lady of Fate in the mail today actually...
17:42:48 <Reaper> good pair of boots will take you far
17:43:10 <Tony_Novello> and keep you coming back again and again :)
17:43:38 <Reaper> hehe
17:43:54 <Reaper> no had or razed realm..no hand or razed realm...what WILL i choose
17:44:15 <Kythrain> See, I was thinking of Stryck and Phoebus' powers for Drawsemaj, attaching the boots, recycling the allies again and again. Ah well...
17:44:46 <Kythrain> I have boots, I choose both!
17:44:52 <StEvil> OK, I think it is about time to wrap it up!
17:44:55 <Kythrain> BEFORE combat
17:44:56 <Tony_Novello> lol
